Spanish Version of Mini-Series a Television Revelation

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — WRAL will air the CBS mini-series "Jesus" beginning Sunday night in both English and Spanish.

CBS and WRAL-TV decided to offer a Spanish version of the mini-series to serve a growing Hispanic population that is primarily Catholic.

The Spanish version is on a second audio channel on newer TV sets, called the SAP channel. The channel provides alternative audio, different from what is recorded on the main audio channel.

To learn how to change between the SAP channel and the main channel, check the instruction manual for your television.

Look for SAP in the contents of your instruction manual, and follow the directions.

If you cannot find the instruction manual, you might be able to use your remote control.

If your remote or TV set has an SAP setting, select it to hear the Spanish translation. To change it back, simply select the setting for the Main audio channel.

Some cable subscribers will not be able to receive the secondary channel. Neither will owners of small satellite dishes.

Nevertheless, for those who can, the ability to watch a program such as "Jesus" in Spanish strikes a chord among Hispanics.

"Any time we try and reach out to them in their own language, it's something they can understand," says Teresa Aldahondo of the Catholic Center. "Then, we're also saying to them, 'We know you're here.'"

"Jesus" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. and Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WRAL-TV5.
