Police in Fayetteville say they've begun to break up a counterfeit ring that manufactured fake drivers licenses and cashed bogus checks.
Last December, thieves broke into the Dunn DMV office and took the machine that makes photo-identification cards. Fayetteville police say, since that time, someone has been making fake I.D.'s and checks, and cashing the checks at various stores.
The bad checks have turned up in Fayetteville, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and South Carolina.
Two members of the ring have now been captured, but police have not found the stolen machine.
Police think the ring also steals payroll checks. They have so far found 12 fake names and dozens of phony checks. They fear there may be more in circulation that have not yet cleared and, since they don't yet have the machine,
Fayetteville Police Captain Brad Chandler says there's a possibility the manufacturing process might still be going on.
They're warning businesses to be on the lookout for North Carolina drivers licenses that are missing the gold emblem that can only be seen under certain lighting. They might also have suspicious dates.
The checks may be drawn on accounts for the non-existent businesses W.B. Interiors and Unified Industries
