A Cumberland County teenager has been charged with murder -- and the victim's father thinks the motivating factor was his son's gold chain.

A 14-year-old is now in custody after being on the run for three weeks. He was arrested in Wilson. Investigators had received a tip he was staying with relatives there. They have charged him with murder.

He is accused of shooting another 14-year-old, Rodney Sams. The victim was shot once in the chest about 8 p.m on May 3. He stumbled home and collapsed in his yard on South Dorchester Place, near Bunce Road.

Rodney Sams' father said he believes the shooting was over a gold chain his son was wearing. Deputies used police dogs the night of the shooting in an unsuccessful attempt to track the killer.

Rodney Sams was an eighth-grade student at Anne Chesnutt Middle School, where he played football, wrestled and was a member of the track team
