School Bus Shooting a Near Tragedy

Posted Updated

GARNER — May 22, 1996 - 3:30 p.m. EDT

No one was hurt Wednesday morning when someone fired a gun at the back of a Wake County school bus, but it was only by sheer luck.

Bus No. 497 was about half-full and enroute to North Garner Middle School just before 7 a.m. when an unknown person fired a shot that shattered its rear window.

Wake County Transportation Director, Dr. Wyatt Harper (at right, showing WRAL-TV5's Bret Baier the point of impact), says it's fortunate the bullet hit where it did, or things could have been much worse.

Listen toaufile.

Wake County officials and sheriff's deputies searched the bus and surrounding areas in vain, looking for a shell or pellet. They say it had to have been a powerful weapon to shatter a window it didn't even hit.

Authorities have no suspect, but are continuing their investigation
