Exploris Set to Open, IBM Claims More Security, CBS Has Help With HDTV

RALEIGH — If computer security is an issue at your home or office, IBM has an answer, and CBS is getting more help bringing HDTV to you. Raleigh's Exploris Museum opens its doors Oct. 9, and some lucky students got a preview Monday. ----- Exploris Opens Oct. 9 -----

Students from Exploris Middle School tried out one of the five interactive exhibits atExploris. "Living in Balance" demonstrates our individual role in the cycles of nature. Part of the exhibit shows the importance of water in our lives, locally and globally.

"I think we should definitely cut down on how much we use. I feel really bad for all those people who have none," said student Emma Shields.

A special scale demonstrates how much water our bodies contain.

Exploris announced Monday that formerUnited NationsAmbassador Andrew Young will be one of the guest speakers at the opening. ----- CBS and HDTV -----

By Nov. 1, more than 50 percent of television viewers will be able to watch high definition programming onCBS.Samsung Electronicsis picking up the tab to convert the CBS Sunday and Wednesday night movies to HDTV.

"With this now-steady diet of high definition programming available, we think that will provide the consumers with a reason to buy a high definition set," said Robert Seidel, V.P. Engineering of CBS-TV.

Samsung will promote its HDTV sets in stores showing CBS programming.WRAL-HDis already carrying all available CBS high definition programming which includes most prime time shows. ----- IBM and Security -----

IBMclaims more security with a new line of machines made in the Triangle. A microprocessor built into the computer supports several levels of security.

The microprocessor makes possible easy-to-use digital signatures and encryption. A Smart Card kit may be added to older machines to help protect users against information theft and unauthorized access to data and the Internet.
