What goes up, must come down -- but it's the manner of that trip that is critical. Three visitors at Carowinds amusement park got firsthand experience with the axiom Friday night -- when their ride left them stranded for several hours -- 150 feet above the ground

Fortunately, a fire and rescue squad can be called to help out. Each rider was successfully brought down by straddling a rescue team member sitting in a harness. Previous attempts by park engineers to get a manual brake to release were of no avail.

One passenger John Kitchen, said the experience was kind of neat.

Angela O'Donohue said she was terrified.

Her brother, Ray Worley, said he will stick to other rides from now on.

They are all probably relieved that the ride -- billed as the park's newest and most exciting -- did not literally live up to its name: The Drop Zone
