CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — May 12, 1996, 11:46 a.m. EDT

An early morning fire at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house at the University of North Carolina has claimed at least five lives.

At least three more people were injuried in the blaze; the three are being treated at UNC Hospitals. Victims' identities are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

Damage to the fraternity house is extensive. At least part of the structure collapsed and the possibility that there would be further collapse has hampered the work of firefighters.

Until they are able to enter the building it will not be known if there are even more casualties.

The blaze was reported at 6 a.m. It was spotted by an employee at the Carolina Inn.
