Gas Main Breaks In Raleigh

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — May 3, 1996 - 3:05 p.m. EDT

Police now say a gas leak that occurred Friday afternoon in downtown Raleigh has been brought under control.

Police had begun evacuating buildings near Walnut Terrace in downtown Raleigh Friday afternoon at about 2:30. They say a construction crew ruptured a gas line in the area, and they implemented the evacuations as a precaution.

Near the site of the ruptured main, Washington Elementary School students were evacuated to a field behind the school. Many parents arrived early to pick up their children because of the Tour DuPont bicycle race, and were caught by surprise by the scene they found.

The leak occurred near the finish line for the race, but was brought under control in plenty of time to prevent having any effect on it.
