April 18, 1996 - 3:00 p.m. EDT

Orange County authorities say a high-speed chase there ended when a car crashed, killing the driver and a passenger.

Mebane police were chasing the car early Thursday morning when it went out of control and hit a utility pole. The accident occurred on Buckhorn Road near its intersection with West Ten Road.

The highway patrol is investigating and police have not released the names of the victims.

Also Thursday morning, a wrong move on a highway ramp turned deadly in Wake County near Holly Springs, where investigators say a car coming off Highway 55 onto U.S. 1 bumped into a pickup truck knocking it into oncoming traffic. The small truck was then hit by an 18-wheeler.

A passenger in the pickup died instantly. The driver was flown to UNC Hosiptals.

The highway patrol is investigating the accident and have not, as yet, filed any charges
