March 26, 1996, 3:05 pm EST The State Bureau of Investigation has been brought in to investigate nine suspcious fires in Carrboro. In the last week, a series of fires has hit abandoned homes, businesses and sheds.

Investigators believe they are dealing with arson.

The latest incident was Tuesday morning on Mulberry Street, where the offices of an abandoned oil company went up in flames, along with a shed on the property. Previously, two former Main Street businesses and three homes on Greensboro Street had also been destroyed by fire.

Local investigators said the fires bear similarities: each has occurred around 3 a.m., and each was ignited when combustible material was balled up. The SBI is working up a profile of an arsonist
