Elderly Woman Attacked In Retirement Home

RALEIGH — March 22, 1996 - 7:20 p.m. EST

Police are conducting a widespread manhunt in Raleigh after an 83-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the retirement home where she lives.

Police say a man knocked on the woman's door at about 4:30 p.m. Friday. When she opened it, he entered and attacked her.

The manager of Glenwood Towers said it is the first time such an attack has occurred there. Glenwood Towers is home to about 300 residents and is run by the Raleigh Housing Authority.

The woman reported the incident immediately, and was taken to Wake Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators are talking to other residents, management and delivery people as they search for the attacker. The woman described him as a neatly dressed black male, about 30-years-old, with a somewhat chunky build

They say the woman's prompt report will help in the investigation
