Chatham Deputy Cleared Of Assault Charges

CHATHAM COUNTY — March 14, 1996 - 6:35 p.m. EST

In February, 22-year-old Travers Black-Welder said he was beaten by a deputy. Now, he has done an about-face, pleading guilty to assaulting a law officer.

Black-Welder had to get 14 stitches in his head after fight with the deputy. He said the deputy hit him in the head with a flashlight.

He has received a 75 day suspended sentence, and must complete a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.

The deputy has been cleared of all charges
