Tanesha McClain Leads Lady Bears to Championship Season

Posted Updated

PITTSBORO — It was a championship season for the Lady Bears ofChatham Central High School. Last Friday night, they captured the State I-A basketball title, and a big reason for their success is Tanesha McClain.

McClain is a senior point guard who scored over 1,600 points in her career. She is a player who commands respect.

"She makes everyone around better," says coach Gerald Binkley. "She doesn't care if she scores, handles the ball, passes the ball, whatever it takes for the team to win."

"Basically, I just go out there and play my game," McClain said. "And hopefully, one thing I want to make sure is that my team is definitely involved. It feels great to be apart of this team because everyone is so close."

"She has been the heart of soul of our team," Binkley said. "All of her teammates look up to her. They expect that when the game is on the line, that she is going to take over, and she is going to do what it takes to win. She's earned that respect from what she's done the past four years.

McClain is solid in the classroom, and is described as someone who leads on and off the basketball court.

"She is just strictly an individual who is self driven," teacher Karin Work said. "She doesn't want the eyes to be on her, she is a team person. She wants everybody into it."

"She is an excellent young lady," says assistant principal Jimmy Russell. "She is good academically, and she is the kind of student that you would want to have in your school."

"I would sum her up as a very warm, loving and capable student that is going to be a fine young lady to the community and to the state of North Carolina in years to come," Work said.

Tanesha McClain for state champion Chatham Central is this week's winner of theExtra Effort Award.
