Durham Trooper Cleared Of Crash Charges

DURHAM — March 12, 1996 - 8:43 p.m. EST

Durham District Attorney Jim Hardin has cleared a highway patrolman of any charges in a January accident that killed a Cary man.

Patrick Shannon died when the trooper broadsided his car as Shannon was leaving a BP station on Highway 70. Witnesses said Trooper Tony Gibson was speeding without blue lights on.

After a lengthy investigation, Hardin concluded thatShannonwas at fault for pulling out into the path of the oncoming cruiser.

Gibson is still working as a trooper.
