KINSTON — March 4, 1996 - 1:20 p.m. EST
An employee holed up in the vault of Kinston's main Wachovia Bank office following an attempted robbery Monday morning has been freed. Police rescued the unidentified woman from the vault.
Authorities now are searching for a woman with a gun who also may be inside.
Police say the woman with the gun came into the bank at 8 a.m., about an hour before it was scheduled to open. The woman said she wanted to make an early withdrawal. What happened next is unclear. Police at the scene tell the Free Press of Kinston that the bank employee wound up in a vault -- where she talked by phone to police. Police say other bank employees have been accounted for. What they don't know is whether the woman with the gun is still in the bank.
City and county authorities and the Highway Patrol are surrounding the building, and a one-block area was cordoned off.
