CIAA Cheerleaders (And A Guest) Strut Their Stuff

Posted Updated

WINSTON-SALEM — March 2, 1996 - 1:15 p.m. EST

Teams from 13 traditionally black colleges have been battling for the mens' and womens' championship basketball title at the CIAA Tournament in Winston-Salem this week, but it's not just the players who are fighting.

The cheerleaders, always enthusiastic and sometimes controversial, are as much a part of the history and tradition as the games themselves.

Over the years, their cheerleading moves have become more amazing and have come to include dance steps and gymnastics aimed at pleasing the crowds.

While the competition between squads is serious on court, the CIAA cheerleaders find a spirit of cooperation behind the scenes and at regional workshops.

That's WRAL-TV 5's Pamela Saulsby, by the way, getting some quick training in the cheerleaders' dressing room Friday night
