The Grove Park Inn opened as a nine-hole course in 1899. The final nine were added in 1913.
"It was a tour stop from 1933 to 1951," says course pro Dal Raiford. "Hogan, Snead, DeMerrie, Sarazen, you name them, they've played here."
Course designer Donald Ross' creative touch comes to life on the par 4, 13th hole. best of all, you do not have to be a big bopper to enjoy it!
"I think it's a great test because Donald Ross put a little 350-yard hold here that the high handicapper, using just his skill, has the opportunity to make birdie or par," says Dal.
A decent drive will leave you with 110 yards or less to the green with an open path to the flag.
You can either attack on the fly or bump and run it.
Jeff attempts to fly it 40 or 50 yards and let it run the next 15 or 20 yards.
The higher-skilled golfer has more options around these greens and Dal Raiford calls the right play.
Fortunately, both Dal and Jeff read these rolling Ross greens well enough to get home safely. And, after five weeks of struggle and heartache, Jeff gets a par.
