The Carolina

PINEHURST — If you are brave enough to take on the heat, we have a great golf course for you. This week, WRAL's Jeff Gravley takes a swing atThe Carolina.

Located in Pinehurst, Jeff says you could hit a 5 iron from the Moore County Airport to the course designed by golfing great Arnold Palmer.

Palmer is known for creating player-friendly courses with lots of tees to choose from, big greens and big fairways. Those features are prominent on The Carolina's par 4, 17.

"It's a great start to the finish of the golf course. This is a challenging par 4. You've got wetlands that cross in front of us and there's actually wetlands that runs down the left hand side," says pro Vic Aliprando.

Vic says you can gain some yardage off the tee by playing the left side, but warns against shaving off too much of the tree line.

Not heeding the warning, Jeff finds his ball in the rough under the trees and regrets ever making a prior comment about trees being 90 percent air!

Our pro hits his drive in the perfect spot, leaving him with just a short iron over another wetland to the green.

Remember what Jeff said about big greens? It was to his advantage that the one on 17 had plenty of room!

Jeff says a house would have put a stop to his long and winding putt; putting lessons wouldn't hurt either. He ends the day with a 3 putt double bogey.

Vic Aliprando did not chop up the course like Jeff did. The pro pars the 17 at The Carolina.

You can try it out for yourself for $50 - 80. For more information, call910-949-2811. Reporter:Jeff Gravley
