CHAPEL HILL — February 4, 1996, 12:05 pm, EST
A sudden, intense fire in a Chapel Hill mobile home yesterday took the lives of 40-year-old Wayne Rhodes and his 5-year-old son Dominique. His wife Carla was transported to the UNC Burn Center for treatment of her injuries.
Neighbors said the sound of an explosion preceded the blaze, which sent flames shooting horizontally out windows and doors.
The fire occurred at 7:20 a.m. at Riggsbee Trailer Park, just off Airport Road.
A firefighter driving by after just going off duty spotted the fire and called in the alarm. When firefighters found Rhodes, his body was shielding that of his son.
Cause of the blaze is being investigated.
