Back to School -- For Some

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — January 16, 1996 - 9:26 a.m. EST

School buses will be running Tuesday for the first time in many districts where students had a week off for snow and then the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. But many schools are still closed and others are opening late because of roads that are still ice-covered.

In the Triangle area, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Orange County and Chatham County public schools are closed. Wake and Durham counties announced a two-hour delay.

Some parents say it's better to keep schools closed until roads are safe. Barbara Donadio of Chapel Hill says it's tough on all involved, but it's snow and there's not much that can be done.

Other parents are upset that Wake County scheduled classes at all since many school parking lots and side streets are still icy.
