CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina football player Brian Norwood has been arrested for an incident that happened during his high school days at Richmond County in 1996 and 1997.

Norwood faces charges of two counts of indecent liberties with an 11-year-old girl, three counts of a first-degree sex offense, three counts of crime against nature and two counts of first-degree rape.

Norwood is off of the Carolina football team until his legal situation is fully resolved. Head Coach Carl Torbush released a statement saying, "Today, after learning of his being charged, I have suspended him indefinitely. I am troubled by the charge."

Investigators say Norwood was just one of 10 people to abuse the child who was 11 at the time.

Norwood was released from jail Wednesday after posting a $24,000 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 16.
