Bayonet at Puppy Creek

Posted July 9, 1998

— When you think of Hoke County, golf may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But just inside county line on Highway 401 you'll find Bayonet at Puppy Creek.

Course pro Robert Wilson says it's a fun course to play.

"We've got 5 or 6 sets of tees so it's definitely a public golf course."

Right out of the gate, you'll find an interesting par 5 staring at you from the back tee.

"Kind of aim straight out over the bunker for the long knockers," suggests Robert. "The shorter hitters just aim right down the middle and play the bend of the fairway as it goes."

The fairway on number one has a severe 90 degree bend in it -- a severe dogleg right all the way around the corner. There are trees, which says Robert, is pretty tough to carry through.

But it's awfully tempting from the white tees 20 yards closer."If we can hit a nice high one with a little fade on it just at the right corner of the trees, it does open up a little bit."Is it gonna make it? It's right on the edge... maybe... well, it's close.

Even if you're in the middle of the fairway, this green is tough to reach in two because of that front bunker. Robert's strategy?

"Try to lay up a little short of the bunker and hope the wedge game comes into play."

With a couple of trees to navigate, my strategy is just close my eyes and swing!

It's now up to the short game. Robert lobs a shot to land it on the mound and let it trickle down to the hole. Golf shot! And definitely a par.

I leave my third shot short, but I'll two putt to make it a pair of pars.

Bayonet owner Joe Poole also owns a 1,000 acre sod farm right next door... just what you need to keep this course in tip top shape.

You can play this puppy for $32 to $40. For more information, call(910) 904-1500. Reporter:Even if you're in the middle of the fairway, this green is tough to reach in two because of that front bunker.
