River Landing Country Club

WALLACE — Say you're driving on Interstate 40 to Wilmington and you need a place to stop off and play 18. Wallace is a good stopping point andRiver Landingis the spot to tee it up.

This course is called River Landing for good reason: there's water on 14 holes.

"We have 5 holes along the northeast Cape Fear River, have excellent bent green grass and Bermuda fairways" says course pro Phillipe Bureau.

The fairway on the 18th has a severe dogleg left, but it's deep enough that you can still hit the driver. Phillipe's advice:

"What the player wants to do is to go towards the fairway bunker, hopefully towards the left side of it and that will set him up for a nice medium or short iron to a slightly elevated green with water in the front and water to the left. It's an impressive way to end your day."

I get a splendidly lucky bounce on my second shot and I watch that puppy roll to the fringe. It must be my day... from there it's two more shots and a great day in the morning -- a par!

Phillipe makes it a pair and it is a wonderful way to end the day.
