Earnhardt Junior Chases a Legacy

Posted Updated

CHARLOTTE — Jeff Gordon is without question the hottest young superstar in racing, but he should keep an eye on his rear view mirror because another young lion is making a name for himself. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is living up to his legacy and finding success on his own.

No one owns more Winston Cup titles than Dale Earnhardt, but this year there is another Dale Earnhardt in a 3 car getting all of the attention.

It is Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is leading the Busch Grand National points race.

"We had some good race cars to begin the season with and that probably attributes to our early success," Earnhardt Jr. said. "We just found the key to having good runs every weekend and we stuck with it."

Senior owns the car that junior drives, and the 24-year-old is proving to himself, dad and NASCAR that the name Earnhardt will continue to be a racing force.

"We got lucky and I did have a little talent so we're taking that and using it," Earnhardt Jr. said.

He may be tearing up the Busch Grand National circuit, but remember Dale Earnhardt Jr. is just that - junior. He does not own seven Winston Cup championships like his father, at least not yet.

"I never really have thought about it much because it is such a high goal to attain. We will just try to win races for as many years as possible, and see what happens.

Expect bigger and better wins to happen for Dale Earnhardt Jr. - after all it is in his blood.
