Five County Stadium: Down to the Bare Essentials

Posted Updated

ZEBULON — It's reconstruction time again in Zebulon.

Five County Stadium has been reduced to nothing but a field, scoreboard and lights. The only thing muddy at the ballpark is the demolition crew.

The entire grandstand is gone. It's all part of a $15 million renovation project to add 7,000 seats.

Aside from a new stadium, the Mudcats will also open next season as a new affiliate of theColorado Rockies.

The new stadium probably will not have a waterfall over rocks in the outfield, but the Mudcats will have more fans in more seats - all with backs.

Currently, Five County Stadium seats 6,000 people. Half of those seats are metal bleachers. The renovation plan is broken down into two steps over the next two years.

The first phase of construction will be completed in 1999. The capacity will be below 4,000, but all of the seats will have backs. By 2000, there will be 6,011 seats, all with backs.

The former tobacco field will also include new bathrooms and concessions, which will become part of the grandstand.
