Duke Won't Let Losing Streak Affect the Future

Posted Updated

DURHAM — It's out there. It's looming. And barring a major upset, it's about to grow. The streak has reached 18 straight losses for Duke. One more defeat breaks the all time record for league futility.

To make matters worse, Duke kicks off the ACC slate with Florida State. The streak isn't something the Devils like to dwell on. They know it's out there. And they'd like nothing more than to put an end to it.

"It's not something you want to have over your head," one Duke player explained. "It's not something anyone is proud of, but that's not we think of when we go to practice. When we go to practice, we think of making ourselves as good as we possibly can. If we can do that, the streak will take care of itself."

Fred Goldsmith this is the best Duke team in four years, meaning the streak will certainly come to an end in '98. So while most players want nothing to do with the streak, others feel quite to opposite.

"I think maybe it affects some guys, but I don't think it affects me at all," said a lone Duke player. "I think it's very fair for people to talk about the streak."

Whatever it takes, Duke just wants to get that ever expanding monkey off its back.
