Impressive Line Leads Pirate Defense

Posted Updated

GREENVILLE — Seven starters return to a Pirate defense that should be one of the school's best in years. On paper this group looks imposing.

"Our defense should have been good last year too," said ECU Coach Steve Logan. "We've got to find out if we're going to overachieve or underachieve this year. We underachieved last year in my opinion. That's all there is to it. Either that, or I'm too high on my players."

Logan has a couple of players anyone would be high on, including the school's all-time sack leader, Roderick Coleman. Jeff Kerr and Travis Darden are all-star performers as well. The three will lead a defense that gave up too many points last season.

"We were disappointed with our performance, as well as everybody else," Coleman explained. "We feel like we're a gel now. We're expecting big things."

"We did have a lot talent," Darden recalled. "It just never came together. We need to have more of a team concept, the team oriented thing. If we just play this game like we're supposed to. I know we'll be a whole lot better."

They gave up 27 points per game last season. No way should that happen this time around.
