Pigskin Practice Underway at Wallace Wade

Posted Updated

DURHAM — The college football season is four months away, but spring practice is where the groundwork is put in place. At Duke, Coach Fred Goldsmith likes to say this is a time when guys earn their coaching time in the fall.

"In other words, you go out here and you scrimmage everybody, and you work everybody hard," Goldsmith says. "Then guys will show up mature from the year before, and they show you they deserve to be worked with to play in that first ballgame."

Goldsmith pretty much has an idea who those guys will be. The Devils return 14 starters, including eight on defense. Still, physically, Duke goes at it as hard as any team in the country. Coming off a 2-9 season, there are still questions to be answered.

Coach Goldsmith says he says a good mix of experience in his youth. Now they've got to learn to play under game conditions.

Duke's spring game is set for April 18th at Wallace Wade Stadium.
