Posted March 19, 1998
GREENSBORO — In the south regional in St. Petersburg, Florida, it's down to some kind of final four. Syracuse, Duke, Kentucky and UCLA have all playing championship games in the 90's.
You talk about a region filled with Final Four history, it's the south-- Duke, Kentucky, UCLA and Syracuse have made nine Final Four appearances in the 90's, and the four have won four of the last eight national championships.
"All four teams have been there," says Duke senior, Steve Wojciechowski. "It's a great region. As a basketball player and as a competitor, you like that kind of competition."
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski believes whoever wins the South will have accomplished a lot, and will in turn enter the Final Four a little more hardened.
Coach Tubby Smith of Kentucky agrees the south region fosters a lot of excitement and an electric atmosphere.
It's only fitting that St. Pete have the feel of Final Four. Next year, it will host college basketball's ultimate field trip.
