Lady Knight Plays Hard, Works Harder

Posted Updated

NASHVILLE — The women's team at Northern Nash High School is one of the best in the state, and this week's Extra Effort Award winner, senior Jennifer Smith, is surely a big part of it.

Smith is a consummate team player who could score more than her average of 12 points per game. She is a solid rebounder who will play basketball next season at UNC-Charlotte. Jennifer Smith is a team captain and a definite leader.

"She provides a sense of 'we're not going to lose,'" explains Coach Grover Battle. "She jumps all over the floor for the balls. She gets on our young ladies about playing hard, and she provides that type of attitude on the floor herself."

Coach Battle says Smith is a communicator. She gets along with elementary school kids, her younger players and adults. Battle says that's why he nominated her as a captain.

Smith makes it a point to know people and to speak with them. She's proud of the fact she knows just about everyone at Northern Nash.

Academically, Smith is excellent. She holds a 3.5 grade point average. Smith credits athletics with helping her to manage time. It helps her to stay on task.

Smith loves to play the game of basketball, and she loves to compete. She wants to compete positively. It's the players who have nasty attitudes on the court that she gets a bad feeling from.

Coach Battle admits he'd love for his daughter to be just like Jennifer Smith, this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award.
