Modeling Recruiter Looks for Large Women Learning to Love Their Size

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Most magazines feature slim models trying to entice people to buy the waif look. But in reality, 55 percent of the population is a larger size. In fact, the average woman is a size 14. Recruiters are in Raleigh looking for a larger model of beauty hoping to catch the public eye.

Many model recruiters say larger women have low self-esteem. Barbara McGahey hopes to help change that.

"It's one thing talking women into accepting themselves. It's a far other thing talking society into accepting them," the motivator says.

McGahey also encourages people to take health into consideration. She says just because someone has accepted her size does not mean she should resign herself to an unhealthy lifestyle.

McGahey encourages potential plus-size models to eat healthy foods and to be active. "I don't even use the 'E' word, but physical movement [is important]. If women will do that, their bodies will register out to what God intended for them to be in the first place," she says.

Diet and fitness specialist Dr. Michael Hamilton says self-acceptance is important, but so is weight loss.

"A modest weight loss of just 5 to 10 percent of one's initial weight can lead to improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and even diabetes," Hamilton says.

McGahey sums up her belief in a sentence, "I'd rather be a plus than a minus."

McGahey will be looking for plus-sized models through Friday. For more information, call (919) 878-0911.
