Local Special Olympics athletes joined members ofUNC'sbasketball, volleyball and soccer teams Tuesday afternoon in Chapel Hill to raise awareness and support for the World Games.
Last semester, UNC students raised $11,000 for the World Games. This semester they are focusing on recruiting volunteers to cheer on the 7,000 athletes expected to take part in the games at locations across the Triangle.
"People, athletes are coming from all over the world, and their family, friends and support systems may not be able to travel with them," says student Carmen Swinson. "And we want to send people from our campus who are excited about what they are doing."
At N.C. State members of Farm House fraternity and a dozen sororities took to the seesaw for a marathon ride on campus.
The students each paid $10 to ride the seesaw for 30 minutes at a time. The goal is to keep the board moving for 24 hours and raie money for the Special Olympics.
The group has already raised its goal of $1,500. The money collection and the seesawing will continue through noon Wednesday.
