Volunteer Training Dates Set for World Games

There are several ways that volunteers will need to make sure they are prepared before the athletes arrive.

For months now, a core group of World Games volunteers has been reviewing plans, stuffing envelopes and entering page after page of data into computers.

Soon, the small group of volunteers will grow. The grand total will eventually be 30,000, and all of them will have to learn the answers to some important questions.

What will I be wearing? What time do I need to be there? Where should I park? How do I speak to someone when I don't understand their language?

You will get answers to these questions and more at general training sessions scheduled in May.

Volunteers are required to choose one the orientation sessions at Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh. The session are expected to last 3 to 4 hours.

After the general training, volunteers will go through more specific sessions.

Once you have marked your calendar for these important dates, you will learn more about your specific duties during the games. Job assignments will be mailed in early May.

Once you find out what your job is, do not even think about changing it.

Games organizers say the computers are loaded with thousands of jobs and shifts. One change would create a ripple effect that could be devastating.

Liz Rubin, who has volunteered at past World Games' will tell you there is really no reason to change.

"There are no good jobs and no bad jobs," says Rubin. "Just all great jobs."
