— Summer is almost here. While the weather is nice, there will be lots to do in downtown Raleigh.

Starting Friday, the third annual Raleigh Downtown Criterium will careen through the city streets. Cyclists are expected to do laps at speeds of more than 40 miles per hour. The same event kicked off Memorial Day weekend last year.

Last July, thousands came to the newly-opened Fayetteville Street for "Raleigh Wide Open." The event will make its comeback July 21 as part of Raleigh Wide Open 2."

The event will feature plenty of fun and entertainment, but Fayetteville Street will not be the only focus for fun downtown.

Moore Square will take center stage with free rock concerts every other weekend starting June 2. The Downtown Live Series will alternate with Saturday movies in Moore Square. The events will be free of charge.

You're right. $10K is hardly enough to capture the attention of a cyclist at Armstrong's level who is probably ranked internationally. But $10K is enough to capture the attention of US ranked racers and US based teams, not just local racers and teams. Better racers make for a more exciting race.

$10,000 is hardly enough to bring in nationally ranked riders. Lance Armstrong snickered at the amout

You are right, the story could use more information. A criterium is a bicycle race where they do laps (as opposed to a road race where they start at one point and finsh at another). This is more fun for the spectators, because the cyclists pass you numerous times. If you have never been, you might want to check it out. This is an event with a purse large enough to draw nationally ranked riders. You can find more information, including start times and a course map, at http://www.raleighcrit.com/.

Anyone else feel like this story is lacking key information. Other than the fact that something is going on this weekend, it says nothing. What is the event? I have no idea what a Criterium is. What time? What exactly takes place?

Oh so Eddie Money is playing. I thought it said a "rock concert". That is just free music. Now for a really good time, they should bring in Motley Crue.

hondaman - These are cyclists riding bicycles (not bikers) and it is perfectly appropriate for families. And for all the ladies, these are very fit guys wearing Lycra shorts. Not too bad of a spectator sport if you ask me ;-).

Watching paint dry isn't free because you need to buy the paint.

Yes it is. There are plenty of new homes under constuction. Just go a watch some of the painters. After they have finished.
