No. 13 North Carolina 70, No. 4 Wake Forest 69

Brendan Haywood had 24 points and hit the game-winning layup with three-point-three seconds to play as 13th-ranked North Carolina beat fourth-ranked Wake Forest 70-to-69 Saturday night.

Haywood finished with ten rebounds as the Tar Heels handed the Demon Deacons their first loss of the season.

Wake Forest shot a season-low 37 percent and fell to one-and-15 in the Smith Center.

Neither team led by more than five points in a close second half. It was tied three times and there were five lead changes over the final eight minutes as the Tar Heels won their eighth consecutive game.

Robert O'Kelley scored 18 points to lead the Deacons, who had their 17-game winning streak snapped. Copyright ?2001 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or distributed.
