Elderly Vass Woman Found Murdered in Her Home

The Moore County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the murder of an elderly Vass woman.

Detectives were called out to the home, located in the far eastern section of the county, around 1 a.m. Friday.

The SBI says Alice Mae McCrimmon, 77, was murdered at some point in the last week. Investigators say she may have been sexually assaulted, and the attacker may have been someone she knew.

Family members discovered the body when they were coming to check on her. They last checked on her a week ago.

"She's lived here all of her life," says Det. Sgt. Gregory Beard of the Moore County Sheriff's Office. "She owned a home that was here that recently burned and had just recently moved into the mobile home. Her brothers and sisters and the rest of her family members live close by."

Investigators do have a lead in the case. McCrimmon's truck was recovered near Southern Pines Friday morning. It has been sent to the SBI lab in Raleigh to be checked for clues.

McCrimmon had just moved back to Vass after spending most of the last 15 years working as a home health aide in Connecticut. She loved going to church and gardening.
