Police Arrest Suspect in Carrboro Sexual Assaults

print friendly

Carrboro authorities think they may have solved two recent sexual attacks. They did not go very far to find the suspect.

Dwayne Russell Edwards, 33, of Carrboro, was arrested and charged with 33 felony charges stemming from 11 separate cases. The charges include burglary, kidnapping, robbery and rape.

Edwards is in the Orange County Jail on a $3 million bond.

When he was arrested for a rape in Chapel Hill earlier this week, police conducted a search of Edwards' apartment. They say they found evidence that led them to the additional charges in Carrboro.

Police charged him with the Dec. 23 sexual assault of a 21-year-old UNC-CH student in her townhouse. A 33-year-old woman was raped just three days later at a nearby apartment complex.

Investigators credit the community with cracking the case.

"The community here has really rallied around us," says Capt. J.G. Booker with the Carrboro Police Department. "We're grateful for that."

Police say he was starting a business in Carrboro -- the Edwards Educational Center, which authorities believe was going to be some kind of tutorial program.
