Overnight Snow Causes Slick Roads, Dozens of Wrecks

During a one-hour period Tuesday morning, theState Highway Patrolreported 70 ice-related accidents in Wake County.

Troopers say those accidents occurred between 7 and 8 a.m. along a band from Wake Forest to Zebulon.

One of those accidents involved an overturned school bus near Wake Forest.

The bus, carrying three students with special needs and two adults, was found turned on its side in an embankment along Jones Dairy and Chalk roads just before 7 a.m.

The driver hit an icy patch, fought to regain control, then lost the battle.

"The bus started to slide and then [the bus driver] rolled into a ditch. Then, we had to climb out through the back door of the bus to get out," says student Jeremy Brodie.

A state trooper says the bus rolled over two to three times.

The students, ages 11, 13 and 16, were headed to Wake Forest Middle School and Wake Forest High School. They were not injured.

The adults -- a driver and a supervisor -- received minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

A snow-covered section of road led to another accident along Halifax Road, in Wake County's northeast corner. One car was left on its side, while another was overturned. No one was seriously hurt.
