RALEIGH — A convicted drunk driver has been sentenced to up to nine years in prison for his role in a deadly wreck.
Alvin Clanton was sentenced Thursday for involuntary manslaughter and assault in the Dec. 31, 1998, crash that killed Nancy Kulp.
Kulp was killed in the Raleigh crash while her husband was making a frantic 911 call to notify police about the erratic driver.
In testimony Thursday, her family tearfully testified about the impact of Kulp's death.
"Nancy was a very important influence," said husband Jeff Kulp. "It is hard for me to realize she is gone, and she is not coming back."
Clanton will begin serving his prison term next week.
