Officer Shot Getaway Car Driver In November Bank Robbery

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — A Raleigh police officer fired the shots that killed the driver of a getaway car. That is the finding of a Raleigh police report, submitted to City Manager Dempsey Benton on Friday.

Theresa Ann Nance, 25, was driving the getaway car when Bruce Womack, 32, allegedly robbed the Centura Bank at 3625 S. Wilmington St. on Nov. 24. Nance's vehicle ran off the pavement along a sharp curve on Tryon Road.

In a struggle between Womack and two officers -- during which Womack tried to grab one of the officers' gun -- two shots were fired. Nance was shot in the shootout and declared dead at WakeMed.

Officer Jamie Privette fired the shot that killed Nance. Officer T.L. Hairston also fired shots at the suspected robber.

Both officers have been placed on administrative duties, while the SBI and Internal Affairs conduct their own investigations.

Womack is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and felony possession of a stolen firearm. The charges are additional to nearly 100 other charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping and assault.

His bond is set at $3.19 million. -->
