Vandals Damage 6 Trailers at Cary Middle School

Posted Updated

CARY — Six classroom trailers atWest Cary Middle Schoolthat were damaged by vandals Wednesday morning are in the process of being repaired and reopened.

Two trailers may be ready for students by Thursday afternoon, two more Friday and the last two by the beginning of next week.

In the meantime, officials had to find a place to hold 250 displaced kids. They used the media center and classrooms while teachers were having a planning period.

Cary police estimate the damage at $75,000. Equipment was smashed, drop ceilings were torn, and all kinds of items were turned upside down.

Lt. Steve Lee, a 20-year veteran of the Cary PD, says this is some of the worst damage he has seen.

"I mean this room looks like a tornado went through it. I've never seen anything in my whole time here this extensive," said teacher Judy Carroll. "It's very discouraging to see this type of thing destroyed because it will be so hard to replace them, and our students will have to be the ones that suffer for it."

Some parents say their kids are still shaken up by the incident. "My son was upset some of his papers were destroyed," says parent Jody Adams. "He was crying. It was awful."

Janitors are at the school until about 2 a.m., so authorities believe the incident occurred between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. A clock in one of the rooms was stopped at 12:25, and the damage was discovered at 6 a.m.

There are also people with Wake County Schools who patrol all of the county's campuses, but it is unclear whether they were on the school's grounds early Wednesday morning.

Investigators believe the vandalism was the work of more than one person, who entered the school through a gate in the back of the campus. A chain on the gate was cut. Police also believe some kind of tire iron was used to damage the trailers.

Officials are passing out a flier at nearby schools asking for any tips on this vandalism. If you have any information about this crime, please call the Cary Police at(919) 226-CRIME.

The Cary PD has also asked officers to increase patrols around all schools in the area.
