Young Men Reminded to Register

Posted Updated

CHARLOTTE — National Guard reserve officers were in Charlotte this week reminding young men to register with the military draft. By law, 18-year-old males must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

Those who fail to register could face a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison. They may also become ineligible for any sort of federal aid.

In North Carolina, men who don't register with the draft can't be hired for state jobs or receive state-funded financial aid.

Officials with the National Guard say the reminder is only a training mission for new officers and has nothing to do with the situation in Kosovo.
