FAYETTEVILLE — Two masked men who vowed to serve our country find themselves in a lot of trouble after an attempted robbery of a pizza restaurant on Thursday.

One is behind bars, the other is hospitalized after a shootout with one of the employees in the restaurant.

Police say one of the workers at Dino's Pizza off Bragg Boulevard in Fayetteville saw two armed men come in just after midnight.

"He saw two males that appeared to be sneaking around to the front," Captain Brad Chandler of the Fayetteville Police Department. "They were crouching down and wearing masks."

The worker was armed, and he shot one of the suspects in the face. Both robbers then ran away, while the other workers looked on.

Matt Levi, a witness to the robbery, said it was funny where the robber left his gun.

"He dropped the gun in the mailbox," Levi said. "The detectives came by, and found it this morning."

"Apparently, he was trying to dump his evidence," Levi said. "He dropped his mask, dropped his gun, and dropped his glove."

Police say both of the robbers were Fort Bragg soldiers.

Specialist Donny Jones Jr. was arrested when he took specialist Eric Kendell to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the face. He remains in stable condition. Both soldiers are charged with attempted robbery.

Sarah Williams, a Dino's employee, is relieved the two robbers are gone.

"To know that those two are off the street, and that they're not going to come back is a little bit of a relief," Williams said. "But at the same time, you never know. You never know."

Police say the employee who shot one of the robbers will not be charged with any crime.
