Dozens of floats and marching bands paraded down Hillsborough Street and around the Capitol, ending at the Raleigh Convention and Conference Center, where other festivities were under way, including the 23rd annual Carolina Christmas Show.
"We found things we don't find in the malls, and at pretty good prices," says shopper Harriet Bright.
Show exhibitor Paul Devoti describes some clay pots made in Nicaragua. "All of the work is inscribed into the clay, and it's hand-chipped."
Mary Proctor starting painting on doors in 1995. Now her work sits in the homes of stars.
She says she hopes people buy the message even if they do not buy her work.
Admission to the show is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors. Anyone under 16 gets in free. The three-day show wraps up Sunday.
Organizers are expecting 45, 000 people to attend over the weekend, including St. Nick himself.
