SBI Asked to Investigate Third Fire in Two Days at UNC Dorm

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — Fire officials have called the SBI in to help investigate a trio of fires atUNC's Morrison dorm.

An SBI investigator was on campus Friday morning to start looking into the third fire in the building, which started around 2 a.m. in a sixth-floor study lounge.

Students were evacuated from the dorm twice Thursday morning for fires as well.

"It's scary," said student Kena Alston. "You never know when it's going to hit your floor. It's been on the fourth floor, the sixth floor, the seventh floor. Our floor might be next, and who knows how far they'll go. They might begin to take fire to the suites, and it's very scary."

Students say the nightly interruptions have left them feeling weary, worried, and frustrated.

"I heard the alarm and I'm like 'again,'" said student Shakeerah McCoy. "To come out early in the morning with the frigid air blowing, it's terrible."

No one has been hurt as a result of any of the fires. To catch the firebug, Public Safety investigators are asking for help from the students themselves.

"If they see someone in an area in the early morning hours who they do not recognize, they should call immediately," Major Jeff McCracken, public safety deputy director, said.

There are about 900 students who live in Morrison. Officials say it is just a matter of time before someone is caught for setting the fires, which have caused about $8,000 worth of damage.
