Friends, Family Mourn Johnston County Correctional Officer

Posted November 11, 1999

— It is an emotional time in Princeton for family, friends, and colleagues of a Johnston County correctional officer who was killed on the job earlier this week.

About 450 people attended the service for 25-year-old Shannon Smith at the Parrish Funeral Home Friday morning.

Smith was killed Tuesday by a driver who highway patrol officers say was talking on her cell phone.

Smith was keeping watch over a work detail from the Johnston County Correctional Facility at the time of the accident.

A wreath marks the spot off Highway 70 where Smith was hit, and flags are at half-staff at the Johnston County prison where Smith worked.

Smith has been a correctional officer for the last four years.

She was born in Johnston County and leaves behind a husband and a 9-year-old daughter.
