RALEIGH, N.C. — Eligible taxpayers can file their state tax returns electronically for free this year as a result of a partnership between the state Department of Revenue and two online tax filing companies.

Under the agreement, TaxEngine.com and Tax$imple, two private companies, will provide access to free Internet tax preparation software and will file returns free for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of up to $50,000.
Residents wanting to use the service must do so by accessing a link on the Department of Revenue's
Web site
.
The Department of Revenue has participated in a federal/state electronic filing program for 12 years, but this year marks the first time taxpayers have been able to file online without cost.
