Sweepstakes Victims Win Refunds

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Years ago, a relative told Naomi Cannon that promises and pie crusts always break, and that advice is ringing true as Cannon is still trying to figure out how she let herself get lured into a sweepstakes scheme.

The 79-year-old Raleigh resident estimates she has spent $20,000 over the past eight years on mail-order clothing, cameras, and household goods fromUnited States Purchasing Exchange (USPE).

She has drawers overflowing with bonus prizes, her investment toward the big prize.

USPE courted Cannon with loads of personalized letters, special offers, and hollow dreams of making her their next millionaire.

Attorney General Mike Easley says under a recent settlement, 1,500 sweepstakes victims in North Carolina will get back some of their money.

Under the sweepstakes settlement, people who paid more than $1,870 to USPE over the past three years are eligible for refunds. For more information, contact theAttorney General's officeat(919) 716-6400.
