Durham Residents Meet with Police, Rape Counselors After Recent Attacks

Residents learned how they can protect themselves and their homes from an alleged rapist.

Police are looking for a suspect who could be to blame for two reported sexual assaults in the past several weeks in the Trinity Park neighborhood.

"[We're] learning how to think with your mind and work with your body in ways that you can deter an assailant if one should attack you," says rape counselor Terri Allred. "These classes can be as simple as a couple of hours of learning vulnerable points on an individual, or they could be as complex as several days of practice in getting out of holds and situations where someone would grab you."

Durham Police were on hand to display personal and home protection devices. They also talked about in-home audits, a program requiring a visit from a police officer who will show how to better secure your home, inside and out.
