A Sanford man died and his two young sons were injured in a Saturday afternoon wreck on U.S. 1 near Moncure.

Investigators said Bobby Joe Adams, 40, of Sanford drove his pickup truck into a tree along the highway.

Eight-year-old Bobby Adams Jr. was airlifted to WakeMed where he is in stable condition. His brother Dale, 6, is at UNC Hospitals in serious condition.

The Highway Patrol said Adams reportedly was weaving in and out of traffic at speeds approaching 85 m.p.h. as he headed south on the highway.

Adams hit a Cadillac in the rear, then ran off onto the shoulder for about 675 feet before hitting the tree head-on.

No one in Adams' pickup was wearing a seatbelt; the crash impact sent Adams and his sons all into the front passenger seat. The News and Observerreported that the Highway Patrol had found a half-empty liquor bottle in the front seat of the pickup truck.

No one was hurt in the Cadillac.
